The following steps should be taken to route email outbound from Office 365 to Proofpoint Essentials

1. Log in to your Proofpoint Essentials Console

2. Click on Features tab

3. Enabled Outbound Relaying

4. Click Save

5. Click on the Domains tab

6. Click on button Manage Hosted Services

7. Click on the slider for Office 365

8. Click Save

N.B. When this is enabled Proofpoint will automatically manage the IP ranges for Office 365 published by Microsoft. Updates are performed daily

Configure Outbound Relaying Office 365

1. Log in to the Office 365 Exchange Admin Center (EAC)

2. Select the Admin | Exchange menu item. The Exchange Admin Center is displayed

3. Select the Mail Flow | Connectors menu item and create a new Connector

4. Set the New Connector:

From: Select 'Office 365' from the drop down list

To: Select 'Partner Organisation' from drop down list

5. Click the Next button

6. Complete the New Connector:

Name: Enter a name for your connector

Description: Enter a description (optional)

Turn On: Select this option to enable connector

7. Click the Next button

8. Select the Only when email messages are sent to these domains option

9. Click the plus icon + to add domains that should use this connector

10. Enter a value of * this will route all outbound emails through Proofpoint Essentials

11. Click the OK button

12. Click the Next button

13. Select the Route email through these smart hosts option

14. Click the plus icon + to add your Proofpoint Essentials smart host

N.B. Depending on your Data Center you will have to enter a specific smart host this can be found at:

15. Click the Save button

16. Click the Next button

17. Select the following options:

  • Always use Transport Layer Security (TLS) to Secure the Connection (recommended)
  • Issued by a trusted certificate authority (CA)

18. Click the Next button to verify your settings

19. Click the Next button

20. Add an email address of a recipient for a domain external to your organisation

21. Click the Validate button

NOTE: If you did not choose to turn the connector on in Step 6, validation will fail. If your validation results show that the connection was successful, but the email failed to send because "The domain of the recipient is not configured as part of connector" - this may be due to the connector being disable. Try enabling the connector and re-attempting the validation. 

22. Once Office 365 has been successfully validated, click the Save button
